I admit it. I am lazy. I have not posted much at all lately because of Twitter. I made a personal account at http://twitter.com/orpets and started posting. I found most of the posts are about the Touch. So I decided to make a dedicated twitter for my Touch posts.
So now at http://twitter.com/IntoTheTouch you can read my regular posts. I will use this blog from time to time, but Twitter is so easy it is hard not to use.

AT&T DSL = Free WiFi
I have not posted in a while and wanted to mention a pretty good deal. I am an AT&T Elite DSL customer. As such, I get AT&T WiFi at no charge.
I was on a trip and was able to log on to AT&T WiFi at a McDonald's and a Barnes and Noble store. It was so nice to be able to log in and check email or check a weather forcast.
I know some folks are not fond of AT&T services at home, but so far I have been satisfied and the AT&T WiFi is a great bonus on the side.
Oh, almost forgot ... I also get a free Flickr account too!

Google Maps On The Touch
I am on travel in the Washington DC metro area. A friend asked me about Google Maps on the Touch and I started to show it to him. I suddenly remembered the little button down in the lower left that is suppose to show you your current location.
Living in a rural midwest town, this function never worked for me as there are few WiFi hotspots to map to. However, here in DC, it worked great. It showed me a "target" on the map that pinpointed my location perfectly.
Again, I am always amazed at just how much this thing can do. Kudos to the iPhone/Touch team and Apple.

Off Topic: Apple TV
Not long ago, I bought an Apple TV. So far, I am happy with it, but I can see it is easy to fall out of love with it. First, let me state I love the rental concept and have rented some HD movies and am quite pleased with the experience.
I believe that Apple said they would have a thousand movies for rental when the Take 2 was introduced. I continue to search the "top movies" or "recently added" areas yet the new titles seem few and far between. Yes, Apple adds a few from time to time, but the perception is that Apple's effort fell short of that promise.
As an Apple fan, I have not choice but to wait for more "native" content. However, all is not lost. I do enjoy video podcasts and some YouTube content. On that topic, I hope YouTube is successful in boosting the quality of their video feeds. On my LCD TV, YouTube it is barely tolerable.
Like I said, I will wait ... I am hoping to fall back in love again.
Come on Apple!
Bring on the movies!

SDK: The day after ...
Last night I watched the video of the iPhone SDK special event posted on Apple.com. Here are some thoughts. Not being an enterprise user, my only reaction to the enterprise features was "ok". I assume if you are in Enterprise user push email and calendars are a big deal. If so, more power to you.
The highlight for me "joe user" was the SDK demos. WOW. Games that utilize the gyroscopic functions of the iPhone. Brilliant! AIM on the iPhone (wifi only). Brilliant!! The other apps looked very useful to their target audience.
Lastly, I bet some Touch users will moan and groan about Steve mentioning a "fee" for Touch users. I too was disappointed to hear this, but not surprised. Apple makes a lot of extra revenue from AT&T on the iPhone plan(s). Touch users do not have a monthly fee (which is why I have one). I will pay the fee. You know why? Think of it this way. When you buy a computer, you have to buy software. The Touch is a computer. It needs software. I for one welcome the new application overlords (apologies for the Simpson's reference).
The bottom line is the iPhone and the Touch are going to blossom into fantastic personal computing platforms. If you can get apps that let you be mobile and accomplish tasks on the fly without needing a laptop all the time, I can only see this growing. I cannot wait to see what other apps come out of the woodwork. Go Apple, Go!!!
(Apologies to Speed Racer or it's rights holders ... hey, you never know who is going to complain ...)

Safari Pad? Speculation True?
First, let me state that I have no first hand knowledge of what is going on at Apple. I like to speculate (or guess) what might happen. Knowing what I see and experience with regard to Apple and their Touch interface, the more possibilites open up the arena of speculation.
In my last post, I made reference to what I called the next great platform for Apple (the Touch). If this article from AppleInsider is any indication of what is going on in Apple's development labs, then my speculation just might be true.
The article titled "Apple's Jobs probed over Newton reincarnation" details an interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs about something called "Safari Pad". Upon reading this, my mind started to race over the possibilities. I have though all along that Apple's Touch would be great in a slightly larger form factor. Bigger than the iPod Touch, but smaller than a MacBook.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for this one. I love the "Touch". However, I believe I could learn to love a device like a "Safari Pad".

New Touch Ad and Some Speculation ...
Apple released a new ad featuring the iPod Touch. It in itself is ok, but I am going to speculate that this could lead to something more.
iPod Touch: The next great computing platform
The more I use my Touch, the more I realize it is a pretty decent computer platform. It is a close substitue for my workday computer. Where it shines is in the living room. If you are sitting on the couch watching TV and see an ad or hear about something that refers to a website, the Touch is great to have close by. No bulky keyboard or PC in the living room.
It lets me get the info I need in a speedy manner, and lets me check my email too. The more I use the Touch, the more I like it. It boots so quickly that checking the weather is a piece of cake. It is faster than turning on the TV or PC by a long shot.
I love my iPod Touch. I hope Apple sees the value the Touch offers and continues to invest the same resources in it as they have to the iPhone. With the introduction of the 32GB model and the upcoming SDK, the Touch could be the best computing platform for the forseeable future.
